In October 2023, the Global and European Studies Institute (GESI) of the Leipzig University and the Department of Economic History of the London School of Economics and Political Science will launch the Double Master in Global Studies and Economic History.
This Master's programme draws on more than two decades of joint experience in training Master's students between the two institutions. It combines excellence in Global Studies at Leipzig University with an outstanding reputation in Economic History at the London School of Economics. Students will be able to take full advantage of the research and teaching resources of both institutions and experience a high level of international and interdisciplinary training.
During their first year, students will be trained at Leipzig University in an interdisciplinary curriculum, which does not only combine perspectives from history and international studies with training in critical methods in the social sciences and humanities but offers expertise on different world regions (Africa, Asia, and Europe). In their second year, students build on this multidisciplinary understanding of processes of globalization to specialize in Global Economic History and its embedding into political and cultural history at LSE, where they will also write their MA thesis.
The two-year programme will be taught entirely in English. Upon completion, students will have developed a critical and multi-sited perspective on globalization projects of actors in different parts of the world, they will be able to reflect on how concepts of globalization worked out in the past and today in different world regions and how this translates into different academic, and political agendas, and they will have been trained in a thorough understanding of the role of economic actors, economic concepts as well as methodologies in global dynamics of the past and the present.
