The Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) was founded in 2007 by the Addis Ababa University (AAU) to impart knowledge and conduct research in the field of peace and security with a regional focus on the Horn of Africa.
It is one of the five Centres of Excellence at AAU and qualifies students in conflict prevention, management and resolution as well as peace building.
IPSS is the first academic institution in Africa that was given a mandate by the African Union (AU) as a partner in planning and implementing one of its masters programmes, “Managing Peace and Security in Africa” for senior executives of the AU, the regional communities (RECs) and the emerging African security community.
The institute's reputation is excellent in Addis Ababa and beyond.
For the M.A. 'Global Studies with a special emphasis on Peace and Security in Africa' GESI and IPSS staff will work in close cooperation. The main contact persons at the partner institution in Addis Ababa are:
Mr. Kidane Kiros, the director of the IPSS, Addis Ababa University
Mr. Solomon Hassen, the academic programme coordinator at the IPSS, Addis Ababa University
The institute is located on the campus of the Business and Finance Department of Addis Ababa University. This campus is close to the main campus of AAU.
In close vicinity to the IPSS lies the German Goethe Institute where seminar rooms, a ceremonial hall, a restaurant and a café, a computer room, daily newspapers and a small library are accessible to the public.
