Frankreichzentrum / Center of French Studies
The Frankreichzentrum was founded in 1993 at the initiative of the Rectorate of the University of Leipzig and became part of the Centre for Advanced Studies until 2008. With the creation of GESI some of the former activities were transferred to the institute, and it took over responsibility for the cooperation with the Paris-based research group on “Cultural Transfer between Germany and France” with which it investigates the transnationally entangled history of humanities and area studies in both countries from the 18th century to the present. The GESI contributes actively to the current reanimation of the Frankreichzentrum as a multi-disciplinary platform for cooperation with French and other francophone scholars and academic institutions in the field of graduate training and research. (more information)
In francophone Africa the GESI works in particular together with the African-German-Research Centre at the University of Yaoundé I.
